History to the present day
The hotel was formerly the Rectory for the village of Burton and parts of the annexe date back to the early 13th Century. It was the home for several clergy from the late 1700's and up until the 1970's when it was sold by the church and made into an hotel. The current owners purchased it in 1999 when it had 9 bedrooms and a small restaurant. Just last year, during a wedding, the brides' train caught under the stairs cupboard to reveal a piece of wood which uncovered that the stairs had been made of old packing cases and the lovely calligraphy hand written on them belonged to the former owner, Rev John Brigstocke with the date 1791. The hotel name relates to a stretch of the River Cleddau which is close by and is known as "beggars reach".
